We’re All A Little Nervous

I don’t know if I’m ready for my peace to be shattered. It’s been kinda nice not having to worry about J for the past almost 2 years. Now as the time draws near – could be as soon as this Friday – I’m scared. I’m excited. I’m hopeful. I’m prayerful. I’ve really really missed him, as a person. I have NOT missed the disease!

And I have a million questions! He’s 22 years old. How far do I take the “discipline” once he’s back in my home? Curfew? Chores? Rules? Expectations? I’m not sure how to handle him as an adult, as a CLEAN adult, because I’ve never had to. He’s been using since 16 years old. We’re going to have to feel our way through this together. It’s going to be interesting.

My husband said to me the other day, “Am I supposed to be happy about him coming home?” Good question! Yes, I’m happy he’s coming home. I’m happy he’s still alive to come home. But that doesn’t negate all the other emotions that go along with his homecoming.

Not to mention the neighbors. His old friends. My friends. My neighbor (who’s in his 70’s and gettin’ a little cranky), said about a year ago, “This is the WORST neighborhood I’ve EVER lived in!! There’s the CRIMINAL across the street!!!!!!!” Well, guess what. That criminal is coming home now! LOCK YOUR DOORS!! HIDE YOUR WIFE AND KIDS!!

Sheesh!

This is gonna be interesting. Please pray!

  1. I believe that it would be of the utmost importance to have rules and boundaries in place. I would take the time and work out a contract with the family and have him sign it. As long as he lives under your roof the contract is valid. If he violates it, he has to go. First and foremost you have to protect yourself and your family. He has to earn your trust back before you can trust him again. He is lucky that you are opening your doors to him Don’t be fooled. Guard is up! I am sure you will adjust to having him home again. It’s up to him to make it work! Good luck!
